What defines a quality hair system?
The Base
The foundations materials for quality hair replacements can be made from nylon, polyester, silicone, polyurethane, or a combination of two or more of these materials. Nylon and silicone are slightly more expensive than other choices.
Types of bases include:
A. Sheer Mesh Fabric. Fabric bases are usually constructed from either nylon or polyester fibers, both of which can be clear, translucent with some color, or colored to match the hair color. Hair is sewn to the base fibers which are extremely delicate
and lightweight, providing a natural look and also allowing perspiration to evaporate and water and shampoo to penetrate to cleanse the scalp.
B. Polyester Bases: Polyester mesh bases are often heavier than other base materials and are dyed to match the hair color. These are the bases used for wigs and hair extensions. They are more durable than nylon bases and less costly to manufacture.
C. Second-skin Membranes: Membrane foundations are usually made from silicone or polyurethane and are translucent, allowing one's natural scalp color to show. Membrane bases act as a second skin, fitting snugly to the scalp. They are best-suited for
those with no hair at all on areas wearers wish to cover. Second-skin membrane bases are designed for wearers who want a less dense hair look. These bases are difficult to detect, even when the hair is parted, wind-blown or wet.
D. Polyurethane Bases: Thin and delicate, these bases eventually deteriorate from body chemical reactions. The highest quality polyurethane bases are constructed with a layer of fine mesh fabric between thin layers of polyurethane. The hairs are tied
to the mesh and further secured by the polyurethane base material. This "Hong Kong Lace Layered" technique is far superior to the less costly process that simply loops hair into the base. HDE constructs all polyurethane-base hair replacements with the Hong Kong
Lace Layered technique.
E. Silicone Bases: Silicone bases are sturdy and unaffected by body chemistry yet are constructed and worn like polyurethane bases. Tape attachments will not adhere to silicone and cannot be used with silicone bases.
The Manufacturer

The Hair
The third component of a quality hair system is the hair itself. Two types of hair, human and synthetic, can be used to create hair replacement units. Human hair is purchased from women, primarily European women, who have for centuries grown and conditioned
their hair for use in hair replacements. Once sold to a manufacturer, the healthy hair is cleaned, decuticlized (made smooth), bleached, dyed, and graded. The finest hair replacements use all or mostly human hair although synthetic hair, less costly to produce
and process, may be blended with human hair for color variations and for graying effects. Because there are advantages and disadvantages for both human and synthetic hair, each person should consider personal preferences and lifestyles when selecting hair type.
POINTS TO CONSIDER:
Human Hair
Human hair looks and feels like the natural hair it is. Flexibility in styling and texturizing can be accomplished just as with natural, growing hair. It can be treated with heat-styling applicances, straightened, permed, and curled. (Human hair is often the
only choice for tight-curl hair styles.) Human hair does, however, require more maintenance than synthetic hair, usually with periodic re-coloring to assure a good match. Because human hair is more expensive to manufacture, it often commands premium prices.

Synthetic Hair
Advances in synthetic technology have made synthetic hair replacement a viable option. It is durable and holds its color for the life of the unit. The main disadvantage of synthetic hair is the lack of styling options. Style is not long-lasting and water tends
to straighten it. Because it does not reflect sunlight and cannot be re-colored, it may appear too dark or too light if one's natural hair tends to change color from summer to winter.
Blends of Hair
Blends of human and synthetic hair balance the advantages and disadvantages of each. Blends can provide highlights with seasonal changes. Full grays or salt-and-pepper replacements are best made from synthetic fibers to assure realistic color and durability.
